Conwy 23rd September 2006

Review by Paula Bunner

The weather was great for a dive trip, warm not too sunny, a light wind and no rain.

We met at the slipway plenty of room to park bearing in mind the trailers that are coming and going to drop off and collect boats and jet skis. We got our kit together and awaited our rib and skipper Jon of Conwy Charters.

They arrived on time and the rib was a good size, can fit 12 but Jon preferes a maximum of 8 that gives plenty of room for kitting up and getting on/off the rib for dives.

We loaded the rib, got and on board Jon gave us our safety talk: The location of the Life jackets, Life raft, Emergency oxygen supply and that the vessel has two seperate radios. Very thorough and reassuring.

Then we rode off to our 1st dive site “the Torch” an old steamer that was used for target practice during world war II, its spread over a fair area but in large pieces so gives plenty to see depth approx 24meters .

The rib ride was fast, a bit bumpy at times but very enjoyable. When we got to the dive site, there was a dive boat already there they had a line in place, we decided to use their line for our descent, unfortunatley the line was not on the boiler room of the Torch as is the usual practice, but it didnt matter as the viz was less than 1- 2 meters and you couldn’t see a thing unless you hovered just above the bottom. There were lots of star fish, small fish and anenomoes but sadly we didnt see the moray eels.

The boat tripback was almost worth the outing anyway, the rib apparently capable of reaching speeds of about 40 Knots, travelled back at about ¾ top speed, skimming the waves and battering us all with a warm wet breeze, very exhililerating.

Dives logged were 23minutes to 39minutes, it was a shame about the viz but this was no reflection on Conwy charters, John a fellow diver advised us that the second dive at Puffin Island or around the Great Orm would probably have the same viz and left us to decide if we wished to do another dive. We decided to give it a miss this time. It was a shame as the viz can be upto 10 meters.

Thanks to everyone who made the day very enjoyable despite mother nature letting us down.

We definately recommend Conwy Charters for their professional service, and we will be booking more dives with them in the near future so check out our dive events section to make sure you dont miss out.
